a: allow only certian html coding ( <p> <b> <i> <u> <font colar / type / size > <hr> <br> <img> <a href> and <div bgcolor allign>

and some sort of verry simple What You See is What You Get - editor, whit these basic options )....

any-one ever did this before.

I think <p> <b> <i> <u> <br> <img> and <a href> are quite useless, because they are generated automaticly after posting a message when you have used the buttons above.

<font colar / type / size > <hr> and <div bgcolor allign> can be added quite easy, when you add some lines to bb_codes.php.
It's not hard to create a [hr] tag, that results in <hr>. Think about what you could do with [red][/red] and [16][/16] :-)

When you convert your wishes to bb_codes, you are still safe that no unwanted html enters your forum. It might be a little harder to create some extra buttons in the post_form if you want to serve your users to the max, but it can be done.

A WYSIWYG editor? Never seen on forums. Might be posible for some hotshot Java or Flash programmer. If you find something like that, let me know. I won't use it but I would like to see how it works and what it looks like :)

You can make any BB code if you have enough knowledge. I think, even strict HTML could be parsed through bb_codes.php

About WYSIWYG - Sergei from our team is working on something related, but nobody knows when it will be up :)

I Guess the biggest chalenge is to Rewrite the post.php (or whatever its called) and include filter-html.inc (instead of bbcode.inc )

so after that write a Function
if $message contains a "<" and it isn't folowed up by any one of the values in a safe-liste it will be convertet to its "& #...;" value also than things like onclic onload and stuf like that probebly be stripped to exclude javascript.

In this moment there are at least 10 well known IE compatible WYSIWYG text box applets, that can be applied to any textarea. But they are very heavy and are for something that is much bigger than one bulletin board.

that is much bigger than one bulletin board - heh, you are right! That's why we doubt to have it by default.

It's not necessary. What one needs for messages? Normal, bold, italic, pictures, links, quotations, and files uploading (existing already). Many BBs have less than this. What else? The message to sing, dance, move, jump, cry, laugh, ding-dong? :) This is not a BB already, this is an overburdened web page. This is a TV show! Such things are to be done with Dreamweaver and FrontPage, not with a BB.

Well, may be colored text and sizes, and that's all. Not even left and right text, because the users of a BB usually are not competent enough to use it.

The BB Codes have one unique advantage - they are manual and the writing people can control what they want to appear in the message absolutely.

As per the not reading and not writing lazy teens that cannot write their names and to remember 3-4 BB Codes, if that's so, than it's not sure that they couldl write something with 2 grams of sense in ANY BB.

Finally, the simplest things are the best and surest ones.

reason i asked because, id like to aply this as a back-end to RPG where people write chapters of the story-line, inserting emages, mixing what is told by the writer and what was actualy said ('quotes') in diferent colors, i want to use something like this because i dont intend to give all participants acceps to my ftp-login but do want them to be able to participate..

for that reason id want the rte editor to work.... most of the users where used to MSN-Groups but be biggest issue is the lack of space a user has... therefor i wanted to have a minimalistic forum structure - as fast and simple as it could get and - add the WYWYG - editor best suitable...

Than you want special blog with WYSIWYG, not a BB. Or a specially addapted BB for RPG. This is very different than BB.

Quotations in different colors... :)

By the way, I guess that now you, too, can pay and implement some WYSIWYG editor to your miniBB, but it will work mainly with IE and it's not worth at all to change entire BB for 20,000 users for one very specific case.

I could say only one - if you need custom implementation, just hire a programmer, and he will do that for you.

hmm i have narowed down the options to just 2 posebilities,
both rather simple - yet affective,

WIDGEDITOR - seams rather cewl but also prety bigg (40Kb *.JS file) and wold also involve adding some extra features,

the other one - already mentioned in the other tread RTE - but haven't realy looked to that one yet...

Well, for now we have almost what widgeditor does. If it's hard for your users to see really bold text instead of [b]rounded[/b], I think, it is not worth of installing 40 K of code.
