I've been cleaning up our company website, and dealing with canonical url issues.
In doing this, we've stripped out the use of the leading www. from all urls.

But, the log-in to the forums stopped working.
What I found is the «$main_url='https://...» entry would not work when the www. was removed.

So: $main_url='https://www.lightillusion.com/forums'; works
But: $main_url='https://lightillusion.com/forums'; doesn't.

Am I missing something?
(It is most likely my lack of knowledge/understanding...)
I have set the htaccess file to redirect 'www.' to 'non-www.', etc.

It was my htaccess file within the Forums folder that was the issue.
I had forgotten to change its contents for the dropping of www.

I suppose you just were having redirection from non-www to www domain set up in .htaccess, so yes — now you should provide the opposite code, i.e. redirect from www to non-www. This is a must to avoid duplicates in search engine.

Hopefully you did it right!
